Replicator
Replicator renamed
I discovered that there's already a piece of software out there called Replicator, so it now has a new name.
In fact, it doesn't just have a new name, it has a neu name, since the new name is Neu.
Still with me?
Visit the Neu (the application formerly known as Replicator) homepage for more details.
Update:
I forgot to mention that the change of name broke the auto-updating mechanism, so you will need to manually download it again.
Replicator 1.0b13
I've just released the latest update to Replicator, a utility that lets you create new documents directly from the Finder, using predefined stationary.
The new version (1.0b13) lets you choose the template to replicate using a grid view, rather than a list view, which looks a bit cleaner and reduces the likelihood of nasty scrollbars appearing.
If you've got an existing version, it should pick up the update automatically when you next run it. If not, you can grab it from here) page.
Using Neu
To Use From The Menubar
By default, Neu will install a small menu in your menubar. You can use this to create new files.
Click this menu, and choose "Create Document" to create a new file.
By default, the file will be placed into the folder that the front window in the Finder is showing. If there are no Finder windows open, it will go onto your desktop.
Once the file has been created, the Finder will come to the front, with the file selected.
If you choose "Create And Open Document" instead, the document will then be opened in its default application.
To Use From The Dock
Neu also installs a dock menu, which you can see by right-clicking on the Neu icon in the dock.
This works in the same way as the status menu described above.
To Use Directly From The Finder
To use Neu directly from the Finder, you need to have enabled the Neu service commands.
Go to the Finder, right-click on any file or folder and choose "Create Document..."" or ""Create And Open Document..."".
Neu will launch, and present you with a window showing the templates that you can choose from.
Select one and click "Create" or hit the return key.
If you want to cancel the operation without making a file, click "Cancel" or hit the escape key.
To Use From Any Application
You can also set a global key combination which Neu will respond to from any application.
When you hit this key, Neu will come to the front and behave as if you had right-clicked in the front Finder window.
To set the hot-key, choose "Preferences..." from the "Neu" menu, and select the "General" tab.
You can change the hot keys by clicking on the two buttons in the "Hotkeys" section at the bottom of the panel.
Changing The Name Of The New Files
Normally, Neu gives the newly created file a default name based on the name of the template - for example "Untitled Text File".
If you want more control over the name, you can configure Neu to ask you to name the new file before it is created.
To do this, choose "Preferences..." from the "Neu" menu, and select the "General" tab.
Tick the "Show 'Save' Dialog for new items" option.
Now, after you've selected the item to use, you'll be presented with an extra dialog asking you to name it. You can also use this dialog to change the location at which the new item will be created.
Settings
You can configure Neu to stay running after you've duplicated an item, or to quit immediately. If you leave it running, by default it will show up in the Dock like any other application. If you don't want this to happen, you can configure it to run in the background. In this case it will install a small menu item on the top-right of your menu bar. You can use this item to access Neu, change it's preferences, or ask it to quit.
